But... Cisco is so expensive! They have to be good!?

First of all, their protocol and platform is proprietary. Look into the future when you might need to interface with other technologies, such as Skype or IAX2. Secondly, let me let you in on a little secret. Cisco is notorious for using old and obsolete hardware for their network devices. To have a router powerful enough to be a BGP4 router, you need to spend tens of thousands of dollars. Well they are a business so they have to think of ways to milk the market. (Why else is OpenGBPD released that can even run on a PC?) Lastly, which applies to alot of commercial firms including Cisco, is that they shamelessly took so much from the Open Source community and have never given anything back, not even a word of credit!
